Christmas Recap Part 1

I am still mourning the fact that I don’t have a camera right now and until about February, it’s not really in the budget. So, I don’t have many pictures from Christmas and what I have is pitiful. My stepson Jude came from Orlando and stayed with us the week leading up to Christmas. That was absolute insanity. The boys really enjoyed themselves, which means they worked me to death. I took care of all FOUR boys (under 6) while Dustin went to work in the evenings. I’m exhausted just thinking about it.

Through a turn of events I don’t want to get into, Jude ended up sleeping in our bed the whole time he was here.

Once Jude headed back to Florida, things slowly started getting back to normal except, of course, for Christmas. This year I decided to start new traditions. We started a LOT at once, but it was fun. We started Elf on the Shelf right after Thanksgiving. How fun! We also started Christmas Eve traditions. We gave the boys PJs to wear to bed that night, a Christmas book to read before bed (The Night Before Christmas), and gave each an ornament that represents something they were interested in this year. The Christmas Eve photos are exceptionally blurry. I didn’t realize there was some sort of gunk all over my cell phone camera’s lens.

After opening their traditional gifts, we all had refreshments. For Mom and Dad…

Once the boys were in bed, I gave myself a festive manicure, then Santa came!

Hump Day [Photo] Dump Day

I have so many random pictures on my phone and had intended to fully blog about some of them. But ya know what? It’s just not happening. Too much going on this holiday week. So instead, you get lots of photos, some with explanations, some without.

Sharing is hard. Harper fell asleep here that night.

This was the first day I got dressed in something other than maternity pants… new yoga pants.

I’ve also been pairing my yoga pants with men’s flannel, because my stuff doesn’t fit.

My new favorite, Chicken Parmesan Bake. Recipe coming soon. In fact, I have lots of new recipes to add to the “Simple Recipes” page.

Oh yeah. That happened.

I got dressed and did my hair for Nick’s Kindergarten Christmas program. That’s always news.

Always with the weird faces.

Wrapped teacher gifts with NOTHING wrapping-related, since I forgot to get anything. Used mark. delivery bags and covered the logo with scrapbook paper and free printables. The gift was body lotion from mark and rhinestone-studded pencils, if you’re curious.

Just a funny example of the weirdness that abounds in our home. Irreverence and reverence sharing a wall.

This little dude has been smiling at me!!!! The highlight of my life!

Scarf Swap!

I was so excited to join Meredith‘s scarf swap! I love scarves and love gift-giving. More than that, I love connecting with others in the blogging community! Swappers were partnered at random and I was matched with Lili of The Style Spy. She is uber cool and stylish, so I was really anxious about being her partner! I was afraid I’d get her something just not cool enough! I looked at scarves everywhere. We swapped basic info about our tastes – favorite colors and patterns. I told her I love Kelly green, gold, gray, and houndstooth. She said she loves blues, camels, and leopard.

I forgot to snap a pic of what I got her (a deep blue pashmina – click HERE to see it!). Turns out I also forgot the notecard I wrote out to go in her package. I found it days later in the bottom of my purse. But she wasn’t so lame! She even sent extras…such a sweetie.

As soon as I opened the package at work, I took pictures and my chins and I tried on the shimmery pale gold scarf.

Hump Day Dump Day

Nick had to come home from school early Monday morning and go to the doctor. He has a double ear infection. Just thankful to have a great pediatrician, a trooper of a kid, and good insurance! Thanks to antibiotics, he’ll be better in no time!

It’s amazing what a simple change can do. When we moved into our rental house, there were already (cheap, ugly) shower curtains in place. We’ve been meaning to replace them since the day we moved in. In the hall bathroom, where nobody ever showers, we just ripped out the old one and have been taking our time in replacing it. In our master bathroom, the ugly, dirty shower curtain was driving me crazy. However, I’m super particular about what goes into my house, which is why things rarely get decorated before we move to a new place. Also, who knew shower curtains were so expensive?! I stumbled across one I LOVED in TJ Maxx over the weekend. And for a bonus? It was $3.99! I snagged it and some ball bearing curtain rings. I can’t believe the huge difference.

I am so sleepy lately and there’s nothing I can do to combat it. I have been going to bed between 9 and 11 the last week, which is highly unusual for me. Even so, I am completely dead the next day. This baby is just not letting me get much sleep.

I love a fun mail day and yesterday on my way to work, I stopped by the post office to pick up fun packages! Great way to start the day! I got a package full of mark. samples and products for my customers and another package from my scarf swap partner. Friday, you’ll see what a received in my scarf package. How fun!

Nick was diagnosed with a double ear infection Monday morning and stayed home from school Monday and Tuesday. Thanks to his own persistence, he stayed on top of his homework, sick and all! So proud of my little scholar. And he’s much better now after a couple days of antibiotics.

What’s left?

I have had tons of questions asked lately from co-workers, family, and friends about what we have left to get for the baby. People just love to buy baby gifts! The thing is, while we are registered at Target and Walmart, a lot of the things we really HAVE to have aren’t as easy to just buy. Well, not if you want it to be a surprise anyway. And they’re pricey, to boot.

So what are some of these hard-to-come-by must haves?

Closet Rod. Yeah, no joke. The closets in our house have hanging rods that are HUGE. They are so fat that a normal adult hanger barely fits over it. Forget about a baby hanger fitting! So a run to Home Depot is in order for us before we can organize the nursery. And I mean, who wants to go shopping for a baby gift at Home Depot?

Thrifted dresser + paint. I’ve had a couple of people ask if we need a changing table. My awesome friend Brandy got us a Munchkin organizing station, so we have an awesome space to organize our cloth diaper stash and other essentials! I’m not much for changing tables and instead have been looking for a small used dresser that I can paint bright yellow and plop the changing pad on top. Again, who baby shops at yard sales? Well, I’m sure someone does, but not for dressers! And again, you’d be back to Home Depot for the paint.

Grey + white fabric. I’ve been shopping for grey and white fabric in modern patterns for my mom to make our crib bedding. I already gave her some yellow and white stripe, but I still need grey. I don’t think anyone else would know how to shop for this.

Cloth diapers, cloth wipes, and inserts. I did receive some disposable diapers and wipes at my shower and will hold onto them just in case I need them for backup. I do plan on using disposables until baby fits into our one-size diapers and all meconium has passed. I also received disposable wipes, which I’m sure will get used. However, we still need more cloth diapers. We have chosen Sunbaby diapers for the bulk of our stash and they come out with new prints tomorrow! I am so excited about them and the sneak peeks I’ve seen have me pumped! However, I can’t order right now, due to a temporary spending freeze in our household. So until I can get a 12-diaper bundle ($60), I’m kinda stuck. And people can’t just run out and buy these. They take several weeks to come in, so it’s not a practical gift for most. I also need some hemp and bamboo inserts, as well as some infant prefolds.

Radian car seat. Every baby needs a carseat and it’s a popular shower gift for a lot of families. Unfortunately, we are absolutely required to have a Radian if we want all our kids to be able to ride in our car at once! These are $183 on Walmart.com and more than that from other places! And get ready for this… I have to have TWO of them…one for Quentin and one for Harper.

Diaper bag. I have decided to get an utility tote from 31 Gifts, which again is only online! Doesn’t make for great last-minute shopping!

Double jogging stroller. This isn’t that hard to come by, but it certainly isn’t cheap. I haven’t made a final decision on a brand or model, because I’m not too choosy, but it’s definitely an essential item. Dustin and Harper walk Nick to and from school every day and our little mall strollers just aren’t working out so great. We want to be able to take Quentin on these walks too, so we need to double up on the all-terrain goodness.

So to say the least, we have a lot to buy and plan for in the next 8.5 weeks! eeek! All I know is, if anyone wants to help with these items, I won’t turn you down. I can point you in the right direction and my wallet has space for a gift card. And I’m sorry if I have made anybody feel like we’re impossible to buy for! We still need all the sweet cuddly baby clothes, bibs, burp cloths, and stuff too! As well as the stuff on the registries. The things in this post are just easier for us to take care of!

That being said, as two people who planned this sweet blessing, we are fully prepared to take care of all this for him! I’m slowly shopping for these things. I just need to speed up! Writing this post has totally just kicked my butt into gear! Hey Dustin, I think Home Depot is calling for you!
